I have again tried to install UBCD4WIN however not with success...

I have installed UBCD4WIN using USBUB, then copied to Katana files over, before running anything I have edited the ubcd4wininstall.bat with the content from MK2K and run it.

I then run bootinst.bat for my drive and all appears ok.

When I boot with Katana and access UBCD4WIN i get the submenu, however whatever option I slelect I get the following error message;

"disk error
press any key to restart"

I am doing something in the wrong order? Or using the wrong files?

From how I interprate it, the menu has loaded correclty however UBCD4WIN just appears to either not be found or be detected correctly.

I am trying all sorts and recording it all, basically trying trial and error but it takes forever as I have to start from scratch each time with a clean format.

Thanks

EDIT: Further to this its all being created from within a VM Via Sun Virtualbox running windows xp pro sp2

Did you test the UBCD4Win worked before installing Katana? I would try installing UBCD4Win and booting it just to make sure it works, also remember to select 'isolinux' as the bootloader when using UBUSB.

Yes I did test it, using a USB booter from within windows and also a normal full boot.

...what I did not do though was change the bootloader to isloinux!

I am in the process of trying 'again' with v1.5

Thanks for your help I will let you know how I get on.

So this is how I did it;

All these actions were performs from with a Sun Virtual Machine running WIndows XP SP2 with 1024 of allocated memory.

If you need Sun VM head to http://www.virtualbox.org/ (Please see the documentation for instructions on installation)

Download UBCD4WIN from http://www.ubcd4win.com/downloads.htm

Download Katana v 1.5 from http://www.hackfromacave.com/katana.htm ... a_download

Verify both downloads using MD5 checker http://download.cnet.com/MD5-Checker/30 ... 10639.html

1) Install UBCD4WIN to your local machine. Remember that you will need a copy of Windows Xp Slipstreamed with SP2 or later. Make sure that you select the create ISO image option at the bottom of the menu, if you don't do this then later you may get lots and lots of menus in BartPE which is not good.

For information on slipstreaming please go to http://www.ubcd4win.com/slipstream.htm

2) Get your USB Drive and connect it. Remember it must be at minimum 8gb, 16gb would be a good idea to give you some extra space to store things if need be.

Navigate to %root%ubcd4win on your local system, inside here you will find the USBUB.exe, run this as administrator.

You don't need to modify very much here but remember to change the boot loader at the bottom on the left from the drop down menu, this must read, "SYSLINUX".

Select quick format if you dont want to wait too long.

Then create your USB stick.

3) Once complete test the boot with the built in option in UBUSB. This should boot UBCD4WIN, if you get a fuzzy screen which looks like a graphics problem reboot your machine and test the usb stick properly on boot. Make sure the BIOS is pointing to the USB drive to boot as well.

This should work and now you can restart and log back into windows.

4) Turn off any virus scanner resident shield that you may have temporarily, extract katana direct to ubusb root and overwrite autorun.inf when prompted (all from within vm, this may take some time)

5) Once this is done locate the ubcd4wininstall.bat and replace its content with that from MK2k (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4&start=0#p83)

Once changed edit the line "move /-Y %DISK%cmdc %DISK%ubcd4win" to say "move /-Y %DISK%cmdcons %DISK%ubcd4win"

Next copy the kick.lst from the UBCD4WIN folder on your local system into the root of the Usb drive (also as per MK2K's instructions), if you can not find it use the search option.

6) Now run ubcd4wininstall.bat from a cmd prompt with admin rights. You should receive no error mesages.

Now run syslinux.exe as follows from the %root%/boot/syslinux directory, "syslinux.exe -ma -d \boot\syslinux %DISK%:" Replace %DISK% with your usb drive letter, if you do this operation pointing to your local hdd then you are going to have problems, make sure its correct before running!

Now you should be able to boot Katana from scratch and access everything.

Turn back on your birus scanner.

Hope this helps some people, I know its similar to other instructions but this is what worked for me.

Hello All

I am trying to get ubcd4win working on my katana and having a bit of an issue. I followed the instructions ex actually as shown above and when I choose to "Launch unltima......" I get a "Disk error press any key to reboot". I had it booting fine from this USB before I copied over the katana and ran the ubcd4wininstall.bat file.

I wanted to know if anyone else has got this working lately and if so any changes to the previous explination.

I have done everything that was posted in this forum. It seem everything works except the ubcd4win.

I got an error saying these files did not excess do you want to create them. So I said yes.

When I boot the usb.. "Im using a ScanDisk Cruze 8g drive" and enter into the kanatan menu then select UBCD4win it just hang with a black screen and a blinking underscore in the top left corner.

Is my usb still too slow to run it? Because I know the UBCD4win works since I burned the ISO to a cd and everything works just fine. I have also tested the usb button on ubusb also worked within the menu.

Any clues or anything would be great. Been trying to make this "God IT USB STICK for a week off and on".

Thanks.
